Why Should You Serve Your Cat a Homemade Diet?

Posted on

You might have heard that more and more people are providing their cats with homemade diets. There are lot of online guides telling you how to do this, and your local vet will always be on hand to provide advice, so it's actually quite easy to go homemade.

Here are just a few reasons why you should.

Giving them what they need

It might be called cat food, but commercial fare isn't generally put together to meet the exact nutritional needs of a cat. You see, cats do not need carbohydrates in any form, and they actually find it quite hard to digest them. Any diet of plant-based foods is going to be harder for your kitty to deal with, and that's a problem since many cat food brands use carbohydrates to fill out their meals. Even if they don't, it's hard for pre-packaged food to replicate the kind of raw protein that cats would expect in the wild.

Of course, you aren't going to be feeding your cat anything that was live and kicking just a few minutes ago, but you can use raw proteins that are relatively fresh. Making sure your cat gets a healthy amount of protein, as well as omega-6 and omega-3, in their diet without adding any preservatives will be a lot healthier.

Improving overall health

When you give an animal exactly what it needs, that animal is clearly going to be a lot healthier. You should notice that your cat doesn't shed as much and has a much silkier coat. You'll also be less likely to find that your cat needs dental work in the future. In the wild, cats bite through meat, tissue, skin, and bone, which helps clean their teeth. Many of the carbohydrates in store-bought cat food promote plaque build-up and increase the risk of oral health issues, and eating gunky meat straight out of a tin doesn't really serve to brush anything away from the teeth.

Cleaner litter box

What's advantageous for your cat is ultimately going to be advantageous for you; if you want proof, just look in your kitty's litterbox after you start feeding them a homemade diet. If you're giving them proper food, they'll be absorbing more of what they eat instead of just passing it through their systems, so their stools should be smaller and less regular. They're also likely to be quite dry and create very little smell.

Cheaper than you'd expect

Finally, keep in mind that a homemade feline diet probably doesn't cost as much as you imagine. A lot of the meat cats eat can be picked up for a low price at your local butcher, especially when they know you'll be coming in for it regularly. And if you try to feed your cat commercial food that is made from proper ingredients instead of making it yourself, you're going to spend a lot more.
